A one-hour drive from Bright, Mt Hotham is considered one of the country’s best snowfields. It boasts a massive 320 hectares of ski terrain, which gives you a wide variety for a beginner through to an experienced skier. Mt Hotham is recognised as the ‘Powder Capital’ of Australia; featuring 13 chair lifts, 3 terrain parks and 35 kilometres of cross-country skiing. Mt Hotham has everything you need, no matter what type of experience you’re looking for. And, with family-friendly activities like tobogganing, dog sled tours and snowmobile rides – it’s a great day out.
Just over an hour’s drive from Bright, Falls Creek is Victoria’s largest alpine resort and the most popular cross-country skiing field. A playground for thrill seekers, Falls Creek has 65 kilometres of free cross-country trails, downhill skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing and terrain parks, with some of the best rails and jumps around.
Falls Creek hosts the annual Kangaroo Hoppet; the biggest winter sports event in the Southern Hemisphere. Falls Creek is also the official training base for the Australian national cross-country team. Mount Buffalo is primarily a day trip and cross-country skiing mountain, with tobogganing and family-friendly activities. This mountain has three groomed cross-country ski trails in the Cresta Valley as well as extensive untracked and unmarked areas for the more experienced, prepared and adventurous skiers.
Groomed trails include the Horn Road, the Bogong Loop and the Beginner’s Loop. Ungroomed trails include a 4-kilometre long marked trail with orange poles that lead you through the Giant’s Playground and back out through the Valley of the Gods. Unmarked skiing at the Mt Buffalo plateau offers a blank canvas of opportunities for those wishing to explore on skis. With a packed lunch, appropriate preparation and safety gear, you can have a great day of skiing and exploring.
