Looking back at the 2025 Bright Autumn Festival
(As we wrote it in 2025)
During the Bright Autumn Festival is an amazing time to visit Bright. Accommodation can be hard to get, booking your accommodation early, is always a good idea.
At Autumn Beauty Cottages, we endeavour to make your stay even more enjoyable at this special time of year, by providing luxury family accommodation with great amenities, awesome views of the region, and easy access to all the festivities.
The Bright Autumn Festival 2025 commences at 4:00 PM on Friday April 25 at Howitt Park 7 Riverside Avenue, Bright. Many of the events during the festival are free, and many more are very low cost. The most popular parts of the Bright Autumn Festival include:
Wandi Nut Festival
Happening on both Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th April, at Alpine Park, Wandiligong (a short drive from Bright) the nut festival is one of a kind in Australia. You can meet local growers of chestnut, walnuts, pistachios as well as growers of fruit. The festival also features art and craft, food, drinks, live entertainment, games for the kids, and much more.
Grand Parade (part of Gala Day)
Live bands, walking through the CBD streets (Ireland Street, Bright), CFA and SES vehicles in all their glory, local sporting clubs, local schools, representatives from local art groups, amazing classic vehicles, daring entertainers and much more, feature in the parade to make it a day of fun and spectacle.
This year, the Grand Parade will be held on Saturday 3rd May (Gala Day) and start at 1:45 PM. It will be celebrating the life of Al Findlay, and have a theme of 80s Movies!
Bright Rotary Market
There are lots of other activities which happen on the Gala Day of the festival, which commences at 9:00 AM with the Bright Rotary Market, also at Ireland Street, Bright. The market finishes at 1:00 PM, just in time for you to make your way to the Grand Parade.
At the market, you can expect loads of craft and produce stalls, food vendors and live music. Make a list of those difficult to buy birthday and Christmas presents, and come along prepared to buy unique items you may not find anywhere else in the country.
Open Gardens
Whilst there aren’t currently any gardens in the Open Gardens scheme in the region, there are numerous public gardens that are well worth a visit at this time of year, including:
- Centenary Park, where you can expect to see autumn leaves in their full glory. The magnificent river running through the park allows fishing, or just playing stick boat races with the kids! It’s probably going to be too cold to swim at this time of year, but it’s a great place for lunch (BBQs and picnic tables provided).
- Howitt Park is just nearby at 7 Riverside Avenue, Bright, also along the Ovens River and featuring a large wooden children’s play structure, for the energetic.
- Memorial Arboretum at 39 Hawthorn Lane, Bright. (An Arboretum is a botanical garden devoted to trees … what better time to visit this garden!)
- Canyon Walk also in the same general area as the above gardens, provides a beautiful, kid friendly walk along the Ovens River.
- Pioneer Park Recreation Reserve is another place you will find for great photos of autumn leaves, and Bright in all it’s splendor at this time of year.
Bright Art Gallery
The Bright Art Gallery located at 28 Mountbatten Avenue, Bright is always a great destination during the autumn festival. The gallery opens daily from 10 AM through to 4 PM during the festival, with a very affordable entrance fee of $5 per person.
You can expect a magnificent collection of art from local artists to be featured during the festival.
Other Special Events
Try and time your visit so that you don’t miss out on the other events happening during the festival, including:
- Murders and Mysteries – Visitors Information Centre, 119 Gavan Street, Bright on 29th April from 6 PM – 7:30 PM. The event costs just $5 per person, and there’s a maximum of 50 persons who can attend, however, it will be cancelled if there’s rain. The event comprises a walking tour of the CBD with a local historian who will tell the stories of Bright’s darker history.
- Historic Buckland Cemetery Tour – on 2nd May, another walking tour kicks off at 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM. Starting from the Bright Museum, where you will pay for your ticket and receive a map, and then drive to the cemetery, for an informative walk around the Buckland Cemetery with a local historian who will describe the mad rush for gold, the sickness that claimed the life of thousands of early gold seekers, the tragic loss of young lives and the infamous Buckland Riot of 1857.
- Bright Brewery Village Campfire, 121 Great Alpine Road, Bright – on Saturday May 3rd (straight after the Grand Parade) from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. This is a free community event, featuring live music including a marching pipe band, roaring fires allowing you to roast marshmallows (BYO sticks), and outdoor bar, and lawn games. Rug up (or get close to the camp fires) but rest assured, the event will go on, no matter what the weather!
As an alternative to the campfire, consider the ‘Bright’s Got Talent’ show which starts at 3:00 PM on Saturday May 3rd, also straight after the Grand Parade.
- Bright’s Got Talent, 7 Riverside Avenue, Bright. Free talent show! All acts are welcome – young, old, musicians, comedy, poetry, dancers – the more the merrier. Great prizes on offer. Perhaps this could be your big break into the world of show business!? If you are wanting to participate rather than just watch, click here.
In case you didn’t manage to buy enough local produce at the Bright Rotary Market, you can take a short ~10km, and very picturesque drive to visit:
- Freeburgh Bush Market, Great Alpine Road, Freeburgh. It runs from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Sunday May 4th 2025. Enjoy home made food including sausage rolls, scones with cream and jam, baked goods, sponges and cakes for sale.
Museums
A trip into regional Victoria is also a great opportunity to visit local museums in order to understand the countryside, and the history behind the towns and landmarks. Below special museum events during the Autumn Festival:
Gold Ore Crusher and Museum, next to Doughertys bridge (Corner of Coronation Avenue and Churchill Avenue Bright) will be open 2-4 pm on Saturday 27th April.
Bright and District Historical Society Museum, 2 Railway Avenue, Bright – open April 26, 27 & 29, May 1 & 4 between 2 PM to 4 PM. The museum displays railway, gold and social history of the area. There is a large collection of Chinese artifacts at the museum, due to the many Chinese miners who worked on the goldfields.
We look forward to seeing you at the Bright Autum Festival in 2025!
