From rolling green plains and lush forests to rugged mountain peaks, Victoria’s High Country showcases some of the most spectacular alpine scenery you’re ever likely to see. And the good news is, you’ll find some of the best views in Bright within walking distance of the township, tucked conveniently away in the surrounding mountains. So lace up your boots and grab your camera, here are the best vantage points to take in those incredible vistas!

Huggins Lookout
Distance: 1.5km return from town

This is the most accessible lookout from Bright. Although just a short distance from town, the well-travelled track does wind its way up quite steeply in sections. Well worth it for the views though, with a spectacular outlook over Bright and up the Ovens River towards Porepunkah. Join the track from McFadyens Lane (off Bakers Gully Road) or the corner of Zivan Court and Deacon Avenue.

Apex Lookout
Distance: 6.9km return from Bright

Follow Mt Porepunkah Road out of Bright and you’ll spot the signposted Apex Lookout Track. It’s a relatively steep climb over mixed terrain to the lookout, but you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Feathertop (1922m), Mount Fainter (1833m) and Mount Bogong (the highest peak in Victoria at 1986m).

Tower Hill Lookout
Distance: 8.6km return from Bright

This track is a little less travelled, so a great one to avoid the crowds in peak season! Head out along Great Alpine Rd west of town (on the Porepunkah side), and around 2km in you’ll hit Tower Hill Road (near the Old Tobacco Shed). Here you’ll find a steep unsealed road of about 2km that takes you through the pine plantations to the lookout. Awesome views of Bright and Mt Bogong welcome you at the top.

Clear Spot Lookout
Distance: 9.4km return from Bright

Head out via Bakers Gully Road, and you’ll see a turnoff to the walking track that will take you to the lookout. Again, it’s a bit of a climb, but brilliant views over Bright, Porepunkah village, Harrietville, Wandiligong, Mt Buffalo and Feathertop await! You’ll also be able to spot the town’s first reef goldmine, the Pioneer, 100 metres below the lookout on an adjoining hill. A directional cairn at the lookout will help you get your bearings.

When the sun sets on your panoramic adventure, take a load off and enjoy a meal at one of Bright’s celebrated restaurants, serving up scrumptious fare all year round. Or maybe squeeze in a visit to one (or two) of the wineries, craft breweries and distilleries that have popped up around town.

After all, you’ve worked hard, right?!
